The source of great goals, your personal values.

The source of great goals

Great goals make you feel passionate and make you want to work hard to reach them. They keep you motivated even when difficulties arise.

The source of great goals that make you feel passionate and make you work hard are your values. Set your goals aligned with your values and you will have a better chance of reaching them.

A friend had the goal of making lots of money. He worked hard and put in a lot of time, and eventually, he became rich. In the process, he neglected his family. At the end of that road, he found himself completely depressed. He found out that one of his most important personal values was family, but his goal was not aligned with that. If he had set his goal of making a lot of money while taking care of his family, he would have taken different actions.

That’s why it is important to set your goals aligned with your values.

But what exactly are personal values?

Your values are the things you believe to be important in the way you live your life. They are personal characteristics and behaviors you live by.

Values help guide you in your life decisions.

Imagine this situation. You get a high-paying job offer to go abroad to an exotic country in a job you’re pretty sure you’re going to love. If your values are adventure, wealth, and success this will sound like a great opportunity. You will probably accept and be living your dream in a few months.

What about if your values are family, frugality, and security?

This same case might not sound quite so attractive.  You would hate living away from your family, in a place you don’t know. If you accept the job you will be unhappy soon.

This is why values are an important element in your decision-making. As you can see from the example, everyone has a different set of values. Knowing your particular set will help you in your life decisions.
